Super Bikers IV

One of the best races in the U.S. of A. was held at Carlsbad Raceway October 31.

It's called the Super Bikers and top riders from all areas of motorcycle racing were there including dirt trackers Jay Springsteen, Ricky Graham, Steve Eklund, and Alex Jorgensen; motocrossers Andre Malherbe, "Magoo" Chandler, and Mike Baker; roadracers, Steve Wise, Roberto Pietri, Jimmy Filice, and Dave Aldana, who incidentally, broke his leg in Saturday's practice and was unable to compete Sunday. A total of 27 of the best were on hand.

This is the fourth year the Super Bikers has been held, one for each type of racer, consisting of six laps each, with only the top three out of nine transferring to the main. Then a consolation for the 18 of those who broke or didn't make it in the qualifier, with only one transferring to the Super Bikers.

The road racers were first up, with Steve Wise cleaning house, winning with a 100 yard lead on his followers. Thad Wolff took second, followed by Roberto Pietri.

Now, the excitement begins!

Dirt trackers were next with Springsteen having trouble on the line. Behind by a good 50 yards, he caught up with the pack and began picking them off one by one, moving all the way up to second before the checkered flag was dropped right behind Ricky Graham in first. Don Shobert took third place honors. What a race!

Almost like an instant replay, Danny "Magoo" Chandler, of the motocrossers, stalled on the line, having to kick start his bike twice before it started. With four laps to go, Chandler made some desperate but clean passes; one where it looked like his handle bars were clicking the guardrail, taking the other rider on the outside at a fairly high rate of speed.

It was an incredible ride with Magoo ending up in the number one position. Andre Malherbe was second with Mike Baker in third. The consolation race was won by dirt tracker, Alex Jorgensen. This rounded out the top ten for the Super Biker event. The consolation race was won by dirt tracker, Alex Jorgensen. This rounded out the top ten for the Super Biker event.

Finally, 3:00 came around and so did the grand finale. Only ten laps to go to see who would be the all-around Super Biker!

I was hoping Jay Springsteen would run away with it. He turned in the fastest lap time, 1:52. "Magoo" Chandler was second with a 1.53, so I knew there was going to be some tight racing.

When the flag was dropped, the first four pulled away from the rest of the pack: Graham leading, followed by Wise, Springer and Magoo. It was a continuing battle for first with Springsteen dropping into fourth and then moving back up to second. Graham and Wise were changing the lead for the first four laps. Then, out of nowhere the dark horse, Danny "Magoo" Chandler took the lead away from wise. Now it was two separate races.

Graham and the Springer were gonig at it for third while Chandler and Wise pulled way ahead; Chandler keeping the pressure on to capture the lead once and for all. He drove it all the way home to the checkered flag.

Steve Wise was second, ending his two year reign as Super Biker. Jay Springsteen finished third.

The winner went home with $20,000 including contingencies and the Super Biker title. $7,000 went to second and $3,500 for the third place finisher.

All in a day's work.

P.S. I wrote this as accurately as I could since I was more interested in watching the race than reporting it!
