How many of you have ever been to the city dump? I'm sure all of us have at one time or another. Last weekend we packed up and headed for the dunes, Buttercup, one of my favorite desert spots. But as I rode into Competition Hill, it was hard not to notice all of the trash scattered about. The first thought that came to mind was "How can people do this to their own recreation area?" I mean, this is it folks, the last frontier. Remembering back to 24th Street; the trash, partying after the curfew hours, and the bird sanctuary (there wasn't one time when I was down there that some jerk wasn't ripping through it). And people had the nerve to complain when it was shut down. Let's face it, someone woud have burned the lumber yard down eventually. At Buttercup, the trash didn't stop at Competition Hill. It's throughout the entire dunes. As far as you can ride or drive, you're sure to find a beer can or bottle. You may want the Sierra Club to hike to hell, but they'll have to wade through all the trash to get there. I talked to a few of the people at the Comp. Some of them said it's theose jerks from Yuma doing it. And people from Yuma said it's those jerks from California throwing the trash around. But whoever it is -- it's got to stop. If one off roader picked up one piece of trash each time he or she went to the desert the problem would be solved in a mater of months. And while I'm on the subject of desert responsibility and courtesy: I usually try to camp a good distance away from other people, believing in the theory that everybody should have their space. But there's always that certain group of people who have to go blasting by, 30 feet out of your camp, until 4:00 in the morning. If it wasn't for my respect of human life, I would have strung barbed wire long ago. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, all I'm trying to say is: Keep your playground clean and have respect for others who are out there trying to have a good time also. |
