AHMRA Motocross at Barona Oaks
By Homer Eubanks

RAMONA, CA JUNE 13: Kyle Halkola conquered the AHRMA motocross event held at Barona Oaks by dominating three of his four events. The race drew 125 entries which meant a lot of old iron provided plenty of fierce motocross action.
The Ossa mounted Kyle Halkola easily swept both the Classic 250 Intermediate motos. Changing to a CZ, Halkola came out and made a clean sweep of the Sportsman 250 Intermediate division.
Overall 500 Sportsman winner was Expert Charlie Richardson, CZ, who had to trail Fredo Rodil, CZ, through the first two laps before stealing Rodil's inside line. Winner of the Sportsman 500 was Rodil who kept his CZ ahead of the pack of 12 riders early on in both motos. Rodil took both checkereds with first Dwayne Scrivnor, Husky, then Lee Holth, CZ, trailing. Holth trialed Rodil across in the second moto while Matt Parsons, BSA, earned third.
Casey Lessley, Hodaka, rode as hard as anyone in the Sportsman 125 Novice division but couldn't match the pace set by Justin Alexander in both motos. Also taking repeat wins were Len Anderson, BSA, in the Premier Lightweight Intermediate class while Dave Duane had to settle for second in both motos.
Phil Benedict, BSA, was the dominant Premier Lightweight Novice rider. Benedict kept Jerry Sterrett, BSA, at bay throughout both motos. Ron Lessley, Hodaka, kept the gas on in both motos of the Sportsman 125 Intermediate class. Lessley appeared to be the fastest rider of the day while having Husky mounted Mark Arsenault a close second all day.
Plenty of action took place in the Sportman 500 Novice class as first Len Gillette, CZ, hole shot with Cliff Schulenberg, Maico, challenging his lead at every corner. Schulenberg put it together when it counted and hole shot the second moto and this time Gillette was the one to apply pressure but had no luck stealing the win. Maico mounted Expert riders Greg Carter and Mike Halpin provided plenty of racing action in moto one.
In the second moto things started out good for Gary Lower, BSA, as he hole shot with Halpin in second and Carter third. Halpin twisted the throttle on the long uphill section and stole the lead on lap three. Carter managed to get by Lower soon after and pressured Halpin. On the last lap Carter managed to slip into the lead but Halpin came back just before the finish line to win the moto and overall.
Randi Perkins, Honda, earned the Intermediate overall by winning the first round over AJS mounted Gary Cochell. In the second moto things heated up as Don Hartley, Husky, hole shot but then on lap two Fred Rodil, CZ, who had finished 15th in the first moto came soaring through the pack to take over the lead. Once out front Rodil was able to hold off Lee Holth, CZ. Hartley kept up the pace and finished with a pair of threes earning second overall. Perkins was to cross over fourth giving him the overall.
Rick Williams, CZ, looked like he was shot from a cannon in moto one. The 50+ Expert never looked back and won the event with a 10 second lead. Running the same gate was the 50+ Intermediate and Len Gillette, CZ, was in charge with Fred Brown, Can-Am, Chuck Dekan, Yamaha, and Paul Owras, Yamaha, all over him throughout the race. But as the dust settled the front four remained the same.
The same four provided plenty of action in the second moto but again Gillette proved dominant. Fred Brown came across behind Owras and earned second overall for the day. Owras was third.
Doug Archibald, Husky, lost the first Plus 60 moto to Jay Wahl Sr, Rokon, as Wahl had hole shot and Archibald couldn't close the gap. Archibald was able to make good the second moto by getting off the line early and distancing himself from Wahl.
The Bomber class had tight action in both motos. The front four riders were head to toe throughout both motos. Greg Carter found himself in front of the pack of 18 riders in both motos. Carter had little trouble holding off Tim Nash, Maico, in the first moto but Nash came back strong in the second moto. Nash saw Carter hole shot gate two but set him up just before a left hander on lap two. On the following lap Carter retook the lead but the following lap Nash again stole the inside line to take control. Carter and Nash were side by side going into lap four but Carter held the line in the next corner. Nash shadowed Carter until the last corner hoping to slip inside on the final turn but Carter was able to shut the door and take the win. Mike Halpin, Suzuki, who had been running with the leaders crossed over a close third.

SCORE Baja 500

ENSENADA, B.C., Mexico
— Legendary racer Ivan “Ironman” Stewart had his own, special birthday party Saturday June 5 in capturing the overall 4-wheel vehicle and Trophy-Truck title in the 30th Annual SCORE Baja 500 desert race. Driving a Tundra Racing V8 Toyota Trophy-Truck, Stewart covered the 447.6.rnile rugged desert course around the northern part of the Baja California peninsula in a time of 8 hours, 67 minutes and 49 seconds, averaging 49.94 miles per hour.
Stewart, who turned 54 on Friday, drove solo, earning his 11th overall and 17th class title in the 30-year history of the race. In winning Round 3 of the six-race 1999 Laughlin SCORE Desert Series, Stewart won the SCORE Baja 500 for the seventh time in the last nine years.
“The course was very rough and technical, but the PPI/Toyota Trophy-Truck ran great all day,” said Stewart, who beat the second place four-wheel vehicle of unlimited Class 1 winner Doug Fortin Jr., by a margin of 5:42. Fortin drove a Chevrolet-powered Jimco desert race car.
Second to Stewart in the featured Trophy-Truck division was the team of Dan Smith/David Ashley of Riverside, Calif., with a time of 9:13:22 in a Ford F-150. Third in 10:30:64. were brothers Ed and Tim Herbst of Las Vegas in a Ford F-150. The Herbsts were going for their third straight victory of the season, but did keep the points lead in Trophy-Trucks. Smith closed to within two minutes before being slowed by a flat.
“Dan Smith snuck up on me toward the end, but I ran harder than I did all day in the last 60 miles,” Stewart added. “I got what I wanted for my birthday once again.”
American Honda factory motorcycle riders Jonah Street and Torsten Bostrom rode a Honda XR600 to victory over Honda teammates Johnny Campbell and Greg Bringle. Street, Escondido, and Bostrom, Granada Hills, beat Campbell, San Clemente, and Bringle, Holtville, to the finish line by nine minutes, 10 seconds. The Street/Bostrom team finished in 8:49:01.9, also claiming the fastest overall time over the course for any vehicle in the race, averaging 50.75mph. It was the first SCORE race victory for both Street and Bostrom.
A total of 241 racers, competing in 23 classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs entered the race and 221 officially started the grueling journey and 120 of them made it to the finish line, The green flag dropped at 6 a.m. Saturday under crystal clear blue sunny skies and mild temperatures. Racers were given a 17-hour time limit to be official finishers of the race which started and finished four miles north of Ensenada in the tiny village of El Suazal. Racing continued until early Sunday morning.
The only female racer in the popular event made it to the finish line. Bekki Freeman, Henderson, Nev., finished second in a Jimco desert race car in Class 1-2/1600 Freeman, currently second in points in the class she won last year’s championship in, lost the race by just 14 seconds to San Diego’s Vic Bruckmann and Jason Hatz. The Bruckmann/Hatz duo lead the class point standings over Freeman, who drives solo.
Other class winners included: Jeff Lewis, San Clemente, in Class I (Chevrolet S-10 4X4); Steve Greinke, Orange, in SCORE Lite (Porter); George Seeley Jr., Glendale, in Class 5 (VW Baja Bug); Malcolm Vinje, San Diego, in Class 7S (Ford Ranger); Rick Ellison, Selma, in Class 10 (Chenowth); Marc Stein, San Diego, in Stock Full (Ford P-150); John Kearney, Conchilla, in Class 8 (Isuzu Amigo) and Rick Johnson, Barstow, in Protruck (Ford P-150).
In an unusual racing incident Saturday, the Trophy-Truck full size pickup of Jason Baldwin, Laguna Hills, rolled several times injuring several spectators, along with himself and his co-driver Mike Laughlin, Irvine. Baldwin, 29, and Laughlin, 32, were at the point where the race course crosses the Tecate Highway (Highway 3), 2,1 miles north of the start/finish line of the 447.6-mile race in El Sauzal, a tiny village located four miles north of Ensenada.
“Our first priority was to attend to the injured, and our SCORE Medical Team and the local Mexican medical personnel did an incredible job in responding to a very unusual incident at a SCORE race,” said Sal Fish, CEO of the Los Angeles-based SCORE International, producers of the event. Baldwin and Laughlin were air-lifted by the SCORE Medical Team to San Diego area hospitals along with Craig Stewart, 30, of Santee, and Bob Ham, 56, ElCentro. A fifth U.S.Citizen, Zack Greinve, 21, incidence not determined, was kept overnight in San Jose Hospital in Ensenada for observation and x-rays and was airlifted to San Diego on Sunday.
All five were listed in stable condition by attending physicians.
Stewart, son of race winner Ivan Stewart, and Ham were co-riders in another race vehicle but not racing at the time while Greinve was a spectator. The incident occurred at 7:35 a,m, Saturday, three and one-half minutes after Baldwin started his race. While the investigation continues, SCORE officials said Mexican nationals were also among the spectators involved.
The SCORE Baja 500 was taped by Shoemaker Productions/Tartan Advertising to air in the U.S. on the Speedvision Network. First of five showings of the half-hour show on Speedvision will be Friday, July 9 at 7 p.m. (PDT).
Round 4 of the 1999 Laughlin SCORE Desert Series will be the 27th SCORE Fireworks 260, July 16-17 in Barstow.
