Tankslappers Grand Prix Cooper Jancic Memorial
Carlsbad Raceway
July 16, 2000

BY BILL QUACKENBUSH

Cycle News Western sales manager, Dano Legere, aboard his Cycle Parts West Yamaha YZF 400 went two for two winning both the 250 race and later in the day the four stroke race.
This year's event, The17th annual running of the Tankslappers Summer Remedy Grand Prix was dedicated the Cooper Jancic Memorial. Cooper Jancic was killed recently in an automobile accident on his way home from an off road race. Before the first race the Tankslappers club donated $1,000 to the Off Road Riders Foundation, A new Non-profit organization inspired by Cooper 's parents. The organization was set up to aid injured off road riders who need financial assistance with medical bills. More information on the Off Road Riders Foundation can be found elsewhere in the publication.
The event, sponsored by North County Yamaha, Cycle Parts West & Brattin Motors drew the largest turn out since 1995, over 300 entrants, racing on a great 7-mile course. The Tankslappers used parts of the old superbikers course, almost all of the Classic Hang Ten U S Grand Prix Motocross course, even the paved drag strip was used, making the lap times run around 10 minutes long. To make things even more interesting, the club decided to run the track backwards this year. Most enjoyed the course layout, evidenced by some great hooting and hollering as the racers crossed the finish line after their long moto.
The first race of the day, the 250 race, allowed four stroke machines to enter with the 250's. This allowed more people to race early in the morning before the summer sun burned through the coastal overcast skies. This year, Cooper Jancic's mom waved the green flag to signal the start of the first race. Dano Legere riding a YZF 400, Fred Willert, Jimmy Salazar and Greg Luna led the pack from the hand-on-helmet start. As they came around to the start/finish line on lap one Legere had a nice lead until he got caught up in some trackside banners. After coming to a full stop to free himself the rest of the pack closed the gap on him. After passing Willert on the start of the second lap, Salazar pulled along side Legere while rounding the turn at the start of the drag strip. The pair raced side by side down the drag strip until Legere's 400 out powered Salazar's YZ250. Salazar stayed close.
At the end of lap two the order was Legere, Salazar, Willert, Luna, and Tim Morton. Salazar kept hounding the leader, often showing him a wheel. At the top of the famous downhill Legere felt his arms pump up and he had to let Salazar go by. Also on lap three, Luna put the pass on Willert. The running order was now Salazar, Legere, Luna, Willert, and Morton. On lap four after catching his second wind Legere sucked it up and passed Salazar back for the lead. Of course they were racing for pride and the over all. Legere was riding as a 250 Expert and Salazar a 250 amateur. They both won their classes, however Legere won the overall. At the finish line it was Legere, Salazar, Luna, Cris Ridgway, Willert, and Morton.
There were many more races through out the day. Check the results to follow and see how you did. I want to thank the Tankslappers for once again putting on a great day of racing.

Best in the Desert
Nevada 2000
Ed, Troy and Tim Herbst, all from Las Vegas, won the Nevada 2000 in the overall Car and Truck Class, a 6-day, 2000 mile off-road race around the state of Nevada. Billed as "An Off-Road Adventure of a Lifetoime" by race director Casey Folks, this was considered to be truly an adventure by all participants: racers, support crew and the over 235 volunteers it took to this make race a huge success. The 6-days proved some surprising finishes. "In a long endurance race like this anything can happen, it's not over till it's over!" said Folks. In asking Casey Folks how he felt at the finish line he stated, "This race was very complicated to stage logistically, we had a few glitches, but it was near perfect. I am a very happy man today, my dream came true!"
The finishign rate in a race of this magnitude is staggering: 178 teams entered the race, which represented 635 racers, 171 teams started the race and 140 teams finished. Of the 88 /Cars and Trucks that started, 66 Cars and Trucks finished. Of the 69 motorcycles that started, 61 motorcycles finished and of the 14 quads that started, 13 quads finished.
Best in the Desert Racing Association paid out over $122,000 in prize money and Ford Motor Company, a major sponsor to BITD, paid an additional $50,000 in prize money. Ford Motor Company pays $10,000 in certain classes if won by a Ford truck!
Emotions were running high as racers began to cross the finish line in Pahrump, Nevada on Friday, July 13. Jonah Street, Ellensburg WA, and Steve Hengeveld, Oak Hills, CA, came across the finish line first, riding a Honda motorcycle in 25:41:53, the cumulative 6-day time. Firty-four seconds later Johnny Campbell, San Clemente, also riding a Honda, came across the finish. The crowd was silent until the corrected time was announced and Johnny Campbell and partner Tim Staab were pronounced the winners. Johnny Campbell and Tim Staab were running second, to Destry Abbott and Brian Brown, Irvine, riding a Kawasaki, for the first three days. On Day 4, Elko to Reno, they ran into some obstacles when Tim crashed the Honda on a long stretch. Tim managed to get the motorcycle into the next pit and pass it off to Johnny, but broke his ankle when he fell. Johnny rode the last 120 miles into Reno. Johnny, not feeling well, rode solo Day 5, Reno to Tonopha, and solo Day 6, Tonopah to Las Vegas. Johnny Campbell proved to be a true champion and won the Open Pro Class, despite the many obstacles in his way.
