Fud's Crud - September 2000
Dyno" Dean Sundahl was invited and attended the "ATV
Legends Race 2000" in Ashtabula, Ohio on July 29, 2000. The
event was promoted by Fast-Trak Promotions in conjunction with
one of their regular scheduled events. Reporting back "Dyno"
Dean said it was very clear that ATV racing is alive and well
back there as they had hundreds, that's right hundreds, of ATV's
racing. "Dyno" Dean was very excited just to be part
of the extravaganza. What a thrill it was to see his old friends
and to retell stories that have gotten better with age. While
the race was secondary, it was fun to once again bang bars with
Jimmy White. It was just like the old days. Complete details are
available at www.atvscene.com
Speaking of legends, District 38 is going to have it's own version
in 2001. Last year with all the fuss about Y2K Boss Sherri, editor
of this magazine, told me she had the greatest idea since Ice
Cream was invented. "Have a D38 Reunion Race and I will sponsor
it." For once something she said sounded good (Score a fun
point for Fud) I wondered if we should contact CEET to see if
they could build some special seats to support the bellies of
the likes of Bill "Points Pig" Lyons and Leon "Factory
Rider" Livingston. Bob Towne is ready, he still has the same
number on the same bike from 15 years ago. The BLM permit has
been applied for so you can mark on your calender that the San
Diego Off Road Magazine District Reunion Event will be on Saturday
November 17, 2001, the day before the Cycle Parts West Notorious
Dawg at Plaster City West.
While there are lots of details to be worked out here are a few
of the preliminaries. It will be a team race on a short 10 mile
loop. (Not the same course as the Dawg!) Start time is 2:30 pm
on Saturday followed by a huge Bar-B-Que and a celebration where
our Legends are introduced to the present champions. The reason
for the Team Race is because some of the former greats may not
have a bike any more. If some of you have any of the old bikes
in mint condition and would like to display them, it would be
great. If you want to see some old bikes that look like they have
been ridden hard and put away wet, just look up "The Ostrich",
John Ross at any current race.
Back to the Summer Time fun theme. Last month I had the honor
to interview Julie Kern. She has just been one of the kids in
camp for so long that somehow I forgot about her accomplishments.
Julie was an excellent person to interview. We had a lot of laughs
as we discovered each others hidden treasures. At one point she
said to me, "You are learning a lot about me, aren't you?"
I sure did. The future of our kids are in good hands.
By mid August it was time for the Los Campeones annual picnic.
They are the Off-Road Car Club that helps run the checks at the
Superstition events. Every organization has its black sheep, they
have the black cat, Judieeee Felix. Everyone gives her a bad time
because it is so much fun and we usually end up with the short
end of the stick. However, she is priceless and the club is very
appreciative for all her work. This year she (again! as Judieeee
told us many times) organized the entire event. She coaxed the
manufacturers, promoters and part suppliers to donate a huge amount
of goodies that were won by the attendees. There was a horseshoe
tournament, that if you watched and didn't know the rules you
would come away thinking that the farthest you missed the stake
the better you were. One of the unwritten rules was you could
not have thrown any shoes since the last picnic. Rob Archibald
carried me as far as he could and then got tired and WE went down
in flames. A big thanks to Mike Pfanklutch for letting Los Campeones
use his "Pfanklutch Beach Resort and Yacht Club" for
the fun time. Everyone's invited, so make sure you join them in
2001.
In closing I would like to point out to Karol McNeer that by the
time she reads this her summer vacation will be over and she will
once again be teaching school! Gotch ya.
