MAG 7 - October 2000

Hi everyone! Well, summer is finally ending. I can tell because my own family pit crew are back in school. Elementary and High School to be exact. And the garage is once again mine! The `man in the garage' can relate to that. Of course, desert season is looming up ahead too. And so is the Baja 2000, which is taking a lot of time to plan properly. Closer to home is the Off Road Expo being held in early October. Mag 7 will be sharing a booth there with Williams Racing Enterprises (Eric Williams business, Williams Tel-Data is a Mag 7 sponsor) and Tubeshark. Stop by and say hello to both Eric and myself.
Mag 7 will have their race banners flying and will be recruiting new members for our team as well at the Expo. We will be especially looking out for people that want to come to Baja in November to help us pit the Baja 2000. Speaking of the Baja 2000, applications are starting to pour back in. For this race, Mag 7 in conjunction with F.A.I.R Racing Team and Pro Pit, Off Road Racing Pit Service (formerly 76 Racing Pit Service in Baja) will be pitting in 20 locations. Each pit will be approximately 75 miles apart. This is based on the current map mileage of 1,650 miles that we have.
Of course we all know this can change, especially after the environmentalists in Baja get done looking over the course. It was reported to me by a member of the BFG team that they will be down in Baja running the course, recording mileages for their tulip notes and taking GPS coordinates. This should all be on the RLH Communications web page. As of this writing our next Team meeting with all three Race Teams is scheduled for Saturday, September 30th, here in San Diego. By the time you are reading this we should have our final pit location corrections and get on with the planning of this race.
Our IMS Products sponsorship on dry brake dump cans for the Baja 2000 is increasing weekly. Mag 7 is planning on leasing ten, four gallon dry brake dump cans for the Baja 2000. This will leave our bike teams with the job of providing the other 16 cans between themselves. That works out to three dry brake dump cans at our first two pits. Then one dry brake can at every pit after that. So far, we have had three teams ask about them. These teams are aware that even long races like this one can be won and lost by mere seconds or even a minute or two. Look at what happened at the Nevada 2000 in the bike and quad classes. Some first and second place finishes were less than 1-2 minutes apart after six days of racing. Enough said here.
New for this race, is our 11 gallon, dry brake dump cans for vehicles. We can get these for the same price as their four gallon counterparts, complete with dry brake probe. The receiver is extra, but then you only need one or two on a vehicle. These 11 gallon dry brake cans can be leased or bought outright by current, Mag 7 members at our special price. They will dump 11 gallons in less than 9 seconds. Multiply this times how many gas stops you make, coupled with the reduction of any fire danger and you end up with a winning combination. Members can contact Fred Schubitzke at [email protected] or by phone at 619-426-3452, daily from 9am to 8pm here in San Diego.
I wish to thank our sponsors for all their continued support to the Mag 7 Race Team. They are, in no certain order: SKS Valvoline, Off Road Warehouse, Juice Designs, IMS Products, DeWalt Tools and Williams Tel-Data. For fuel we use Union 76 Racing Fuel in Baja. This is sold by Bill Rodriguez in Tijuana. His fuel comes directly from C.L.Bryant's Union 76. Alfredo Munoz is our past supplier of fuel. He has decided to step down and return to his trucking business. He is also the owner of the Pro Pit Off Road Pit Service in Baja. So even though he is stepping down from being the distributor for Union 76, we will still see him at the SCORE and CORP races. Thank you for working with the Mag 7 team Alfredo. It has been a pleasureful experience for Mag 7 and we look forward to working more races with your team. We now look forward to continuing our working relationship with Union 76 and Bill Rodriguez, starting with the Baja 2000.
That is about it. If you need an application for either support in the Baja 2000 or to join the Magnificent 7 Race Team as pit support, you can call our Race Director, Fred Schubitzke at 619-426-3452, daily from 9am to 8pm, PST. If you want to email him you may do so at [email protected]. Our Mag 7 fax number is 619-425-3414. New for this race are the IMS Dump cans and a racer pool for VW type wheels. Our final cutoff for full service pits is October 17th. After that date, we will only accept Emergency Pits with the late fee included for all classes. Mag 7 now accepts Visa, M/C and Dinners Card as well as checks made out to Mag 7.
So take care and enjoy the desert again. I'll be out there after the race in November. Thank you for doing your part in limiting our fire danger here in San Diego County. I'm sure I can speak for my thousands of brother and sister firefighters when I say this to you.

Adios from Team Baja,

Stephen Stenberg
