Flight off to Phoenix
SVRG RACING
BY CRAIG ANDERSON
Southwest Vintage Racing Group (SVRG) held their first race of the new millennium at Canyon Raceway, outside Phoenix Arizona. Raceday dawned with temps near freezing, but the steadfast sprit of competition had drawn those assembled, and of course, the promise of double points.
Practice at daybreak on frozen ground was the measure of their dedication. The sun in their eyes as they crested the finish line jump, the measure of their faith. Our Arizona hosts showed us fine western hospitality with bonfires and good food, in addition to a twisting turning roller coaster of a track. In a word FUN! . . . and to add to the fun, a couple of new events. First, the "Dash for Cash", not a big pay day but what the heck, it's gas money! Also new was "The Ironman". Now get hold of yourselves, 30 min motos, twice!!! This event was also ripe with political intrigue. The first was the defection of a Soviet block rider to the imperialist subversive forces of Sweden as Dave Scourfield rode a Husky to multiple victories.
I interviewed a leading party member, Sergi Carver, who stated that the CZ was clearly superior to the running dog imperialist lackey machine, as he was mixing up a batch of top secret pilsener style fork fluid. I was sworn to secrecy upon pain of death, not to reveal the blend of mystery oil which would secure victory. Naturally, comrade Carver went to battle, and gained trophies to reassert socialist superiority.
The imperialist subversive Hakki Lefevre also had a good day. In moto two he fought a glorious battle, which including his daring pass on the down hill and multiple lead changes that lasted to the final few turns. The effort netted him a 1-1 for the day! Well done for the pride of Sweden!
The Evo classes were very busy. Americanski's Zorn on his Yamaha and Halprin on his Suzuki providing an exciting race. Unfortunately R. Doughty's mighty Maico developed expensive noises in the first moto. Scott Rousseau offered the use of a Yamaha YZ-250 previously ridden to victory by Mike Bell. Unfortunately, the marriage and maintenance contract did not make for a happy union and Rick retired with no points. To the non-participants, you missed a great track, 70deg. temps in January (those bonfires worked great), not to mention double points.
