		Southwest Vintage Racing Group Motocross BY ROD SIMMONS After spending a great deal of the March event photo'ing and taking in the Husky World's I eagerly awaited the April's Japanese World Championship for my opportuinty to ride one of the Marque Championships SVRG is running this year. Rains visited the Carlsbad area Friday night and gave the GP track a thorough watering. The general consensus was that this wsa a very good thing sa the Carlsbad track doesn't hold water well and can tend to get dusty. I signed up for the Vintage class in the Japanese World's event and the +30 Novice class. The World's race was the first moto on the schedule and +30 the sixth, so I got nice even breaks between races. Initial laps in the practice session were an exercise in survival rather than a track reconnaissance. My adrenalin glands were working overtime sa the front end washed through the slop and the bike threatened to pancake out at any second. "Oh great," I'm thinking. "I'm in the first moto and have to ride in this stuff before the dry lines form." I decided that a good finish in Moto 1 would be determined who fell down and who stayed up. My strategy would be to stay upright. Back at the pits everyone was feverishly scraping mud from every nook and cranny of their bikes. I decided this wsa best done on the work stand. Mine is one of those modern bike sheet aluminum jobs. That means you have to hoist a vintage bike pretty high to get it perched on top. I about busted a gut hoisting that mud laden Yamaha onto the stand. A thorough inspection revealed: Knobbies (intended for a hardpack track) completely plugged. Rear Akront rim full to brim, (front ridgeless wsa clean), 2" mud coating inside of fenders with a 5" high pile atop the swingarm pivot area, half the cooling fins plugged, a 1" thick coating on the motor cases with the entire area between the motor and skid plate full of mud. Out came the scrapers and I set to work. "Why am I bothering?" I asked myself. "Within three turns of the first moto it will be back to the same state." The gate dropped on the World's moto and I accelerated away conservatively, awaiting the inevitable first turn pile up in the mud. Surprise! Everyone got through clean. The first couple of turns had dried out considerably since practice and there wsa traction galore. Rounding turn three Brian Backer took his Suzuki through a sloppy line and I decided to rail the drier berm to hopefully out-drag him to turn four where I could execute a block pass. Note my immediate abandonment of the "stay upright philosophy." Well . . . turn 3 wasn't all that dried out and the front end decided to go over the berm as I was accelerating out of the turn. So much for strategy. As I'm picking up the mud magnet I call a bike, club president JW (my mom calls me Jeffrey) Carver motors by on his 79 red rocket Hodna. He must have been reliving the finer points of the Scopes Monkey Trial or somethign to be behind me. The Yami refired first kick (take that, you Euro riding heathens), and I returned to the fray cursing a blue storm. Counselor Carver was obviously distracted by the fine view afforded by the seat height of an EVO bike, sa I caught and passed him by the end of lap two. He'd repay this impudence later in the day by pulling off a pass on me in the final turn of the big hill jump and having Mike Bell use me as a berm as he lapped me on his way to taking the Unlimited Expert win. A check of the moto results showed that I was the only 250 vintage bike entered int he race. Ha Ha Ha Ha! Hand me that trophy! Bow down before your 2000 250 Vintage Amateur Japanese Marque World Champion (try saying that 5 times fast)! Yep, you could say I rode like I was in a class of my own. I used moto 2 as a trail ride scoping for smooth lines for the second +30 moto. It must have worked as I improved my pitiful 6th place first moto finish to an almost as pitiful 4th in the second moto. RESULTS Unlimited (to'90) Japanese World's Exp 1. Mike Bell, Yam 2.
