Sign-Up Booth ....... December 2000
I stayed up
till midnight on election night, glued to the TV. I had been
in that same spot for nearly five hours, determined that I would
not go to bed until the presidential victor was announced. And
sure enough, along about midnight, CNN announced the new President-Elect
was indeed George W. Bush.
Ahh, I could go to bed and sleep peacefully.
The next morning we awoke and I sent the family off to work and
school with the good news that Bush would be our our next president.
Then I turned the news on again.
The rest of the week I practically lived on the news websites
looking for any shred of hope that this election nightmare would
come to an end and we would not be living under the leadership
of a radical preservationist. I literally was sick about what
was going on. I had trouble sleeping. Headaches were daily occurrences.
The second week came and though I found myself terribly curious
about all the goings-on I finally realized that my life is not
controlled by who wins or loses the election.
I knew the huge mistake I made the first week was looking to the
media for hope. Wrong place to look. I headed for my Bible where
I find truth, hope, comfort, reasons to laugh, reasons to live
. . . .
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the
mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar
and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. . . Nations
are in an uproar, kingdoms fall . . . But the Lord Almighty is
with us, the God of Jacob is our fortress." Psalm 46:2-7
