ZR Promotions Grand Prix
April 2, 2000
Ricardo Malo changed red for the blue and took home the overall of the second of six rounds of the ZR Promotions Grand Prix series. Malo won the first round of the series aboard his Honda 650 and took the overall of second round aboard his new Yamaha 426. He also won first in Class 30 at the past San Felipe 250 of the SCORE Series.

Malo completed the two heats ending 1-2, always followed by Danld Haggen aboard his Honda 650. But who really gave Malo and Haggen a really hard time and surprised the spectators and the rest of the racers was the youngster from Imperial, CA, Andrew Hoffman, who entered Class 125 Pro

The 14-year-old desert and motocross racer is getting closer to the overall at these events. Hoffman passed Malo on the second heat and led for many laps. But Malo, an experienced pro desert racer, passed Hoffman on the last lap and led. But an unexpected move put Hoffman in the lead and he took the first place in the second heat ending 3-1, finishing second overall and Ricardo Malo took first overall.

Malo and Haggen were very impressed when they found out Hoffman's age.

Vintage Iron World Championship
Glen Helen, June 24-25, 2000
BY ROD SIMMONS
The Vintage Iron World's was a great event (happening) this year. So many great stories to tell.

Had a great day racing on Saturday totally dicing it out with . . . a gal! Tammi Haase is the 38-year-old daughter of John Rice who was a hot shoe back in the early 70's. I'd chatted with her once before at another race (my bike had blown up and I was watching while she cheered on her 64-year-old dad), and here we were banging bars. We sort of collided as I barged by in the first moto and it was touch and go as to whether we stayed up or went down for a bit. Felt pretty bad about it so after the moto I waited up for her and apologized. She didn't think it was worth apologizing over but I still think it was on the rude side.

Anyway, she returned the favor in moto two pulling a last lap pass and beating me out for fourth overall on the basis of her better second moto score. Touche' With 28 guys (er, I mean riders) in the class, we both got to walk up on the awards stand and shake John Desoto's hand as trophy winners. Now John Rice and John Desoto were not only fellow competitors. Both families lived in Long Beach and hung out together. Desoto taught Tammi how to swim by chucking her in his pool and yelling "KICK" (a story confirmed independently by both parties). So when she goes up to get her trophy Desoto grabs her and does this big lip lock thing much to her embarrassment and her father's howling delight.

Then there's the Italian guys that shipped these obscure brand bikes (Betas, Moto Villas, Simonini) over in suitcases and reassembled them the night before the race.

The capper is the gray haired portly guy that was driving down the freeway early Saturday morning and spotted all the vintage bikes getting off at the Glen Helen off ramp. Curiosity getting the better of him, he does a U-turn in mid San Berdu and heads back to see what's shaking. This is where he runs into my buddy Mike (at AM-PM) who feeds him the scoop and tells our new friend that he should come take in the races. "Aw, I wish I could, but I'm on my way to work" whines our new pal. "Quit that job!" we tell him. "Naw, I don't think that's gonna fly. You guys have a great day anyway." We say our goodbyes and head over to the track.

After the rider's meeting we're strolling off and who should be there? You guessed it. Our new partner in crime had driven all the way down past Chino by the time the two wheel gods got the better of his work ethic. Called in to his job with "vehicle trouble" (not really a lie), and bee-lined it back up to Glen Helen. Turns out he'd raced a Maico (as in "Maico Breako, made of tin, ride it out, and push it in") back in 'the day'. Not only that, we figure out he lives about a block or two away from Mike. Another convert into the cult!

Too much fun, a real memorable weekend. I can't wait until next year. Every other vintage race I'll do in the mean time will seem like a dud though.
