Saddleback
Park in Orange County was a great place to go in the 70's. Over 700 acres of off road fun, the park had a motocross
track, a 1/4 mile short track and hundreds of acres of just plain
fun canyon riding.
It was about a two to three hour drive from our San Diego home
and we made the trek a number of times.
One time in particular stands out in my mind. Not because it was
fun.
We knew they occasionally closed down the short track area and
portions of the canyon to hold off road races for cars, buggies
and trucks.
Now there's nothing wrong with an off road race, unless you're
riding a motorcycle and they are on the very track you planned
on spending your day on.
And that's what happened on the occasion that stands out in mind.
We wasted a whole day, and a whole lot of gas money for nothing.
"Why didn't you check the situation out by phone before going?"
some of the more organized folks in the crowd might ask.
But the truth is, we did. Unfortunately we did not go to the right
source for the information. Instead of calling the park itself,
we talked with a friend who lived in the area. He was planning
on meeting us there to ride that day, so we told him to be sure
and check to make sure the entire park would be open for motorcycle
riding on this particular day.
The next time we talked, he assured us it was available for riding
the Saturday we wanted to go.
We got there mid-morning, only to find him parked outside the
gate, looking pretty embarrassed. Turns out, he never even called
to make sure it would be open. He had never heard of the place
being closed down for races, so he didn't really see the need
to check it out.
If we had only checked with the right source to begin with, we
could have saved ourselves a lot of trouble.
Unfortunately, there are many people out there right now who are
headed for problems of a much more serious nature than our ruined
motorcycle riding adventure. I'm talking about the misinformation
that is spread around about heaven. Information like, "Live
a good life and that's where you'll go." On the surface it
may be a nice thought to believe, but if you take time to thorougly
examine this concept you'll find two serious flaws.
Problem No. 1: This thought is not what the Bible teaches about
how to go to heaven.
Problem No. 2: Who determines what a "good life" is?
Everyone has different definitions of what it takes to be good.
So while the theory sounds nice, in fact its a scary thing to
always wonder if you're being good enough.
You don't have to wonder. And you don't have to take someone else's
word for it. Check it out for yourself.
If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your
heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
