Tankslappers Desert Hare Scramble
Ocotillo Wells, January, 14, 2001
BY BILL QUACKENBUSH
San Diego's Tim Stabb, riding his American Honda backed
XR650, easily won the overall at the Tankslappers Desert Hare
Scramble in Ocotillo Wells.
The weather was great for the event. The rain that fell Thursday
left the traction supreme and held the dust to a minimum. The
turn out was pretty good. I think the Tankslappers did a great
job putting on their first desert event. This was the first race
in 30 years held in the Ocotillo Wells area. The race was well
organized. The course layout was superb. There was a wide variety
of terrain available. From sandwashes, to mudhills, down through
deep ravines, past active springs, across the flats. I was very
impressed with the course layout.
Lap times ran up around 50 minutes for the leaders. The loop was
about 35 miles long. So, you can see it wasn't a flat out type
high speed course. Oh yes, it was a motorcycle only event. Largely
due to the terrain and single track trails. Everyone I spoke to
after the event loved it. They were ecstatic about racing in a
new area on such a great course.
Tim Stabb led from the start, building four minutes per lap to
his lead over Trevor Sheridan. Sheridan, riding his Precision
Concepts/Pros Choice/Dirt Bagz Yamaha YZF 400, started and finished
the day in the second spot. Joaquin Candia of Lakeside riding
a 250cc two stroke Yamaha YZ won the 250 Expert class and finished
fourth overall against the larger four stroke machines.
Local hotshoe Aaron Tuck finished fifth overall on his Kawasaki
KX 250. Sean McGarvie of El Cajon finished 14th overall and won
the 250 Novice class on a KTM 200. Tony Gregory of Oceanside won
the 250 Beginner class aboard a Yamaha YZ 250. David Smith won
the 125 Beginner class on a Kawasaki 125. Greg Maiefski finished
8th overall and won the Vet Expert Class. David Bauer won the
Vet Amateur class. Jerry Herling won the Vet Novice class. Ted
Stough II took top honors in the Vet Beginner class. Senior Expert
Mark Brown finished 10th overall and won his class. Mike Roy won
the Senior Novice class. Clay White won the Four Stroke Novice
class.
The Tankslappers asked me to thank their event sponsors: KTM,
Cycle Parts West, Lemon Grove Motorcycles, Rocket Motorcycles,
North County Yamaha and Ron Bishop Motorcycles. Also, the vendors
who supplied product for the raffle: Applied Racing, Maxima Oil
& Precision Concepts. 50% of the raffle proceeds went directly
to the injured Off Road Riders Foundation.

FRANCO
Antonio Macias wins the last race of the series as
he totals up the two heats with the first place in overall, this
happening in the upper part of the Laguna Salada in Mexicali BC.
Macias raced in his new CR250 stock, which he only equipped with
a desert tank. Macias was initially pressured by Alfredo Contreras,
who competed in his 125cc, but Contreras couldn't complete the
third turn of the first heat, because his motorcycle broke down
leaving him out of the competition. This incident allowed Macias
to continue quarreling with the other racers of his class for
the overall. In the area of the quads Tito Alvarez took the holeshot,
the overall, the points in his class and also the championship
ZR, he won the race on both hits without encountering any problems.
The Course
The course runs counterclockwise in a very sandy track that is
full of whoops and quite fast as well. This course is located
in the sand springs at the edge of the freeway Mexicali-Tijuana
in the KM.26. The race began with the two-wheel motorcycles and
then followed by the quads with an interval event that consisted
of a miniquad race. This was the last event for the final close
of the second heat and the last race of the Championship ZR2000.
M/C Open Pro
The champion of the open pro class #1x Antonio Macias after having
raced only two races returned taking with him the honors on this
last race of the series. "Pompe" Macias succeeded in
keeping the leadership in both heats to dominate his partners
Edgar Espinoza and that belongs to Hector Garcia and who ended
in second place. Tomas Lara in his powerful Kawasaki got third
place. It was a very warm day considering the time of year and
there were many that sweated plenty to take first places.
MC 125 Pro
Alfredo Contreras racing only in his class, yet racing fast enough
to leave behind those racing in open class successfully kept himself
leader in the second turn of the first heat but the excitement
only lasted till he cast the piston on his CR with this problem
keeping him out of the race.
M/C Open Expert
Pedro Penatello from Calexico left his XR600 home and competed
in his Kawasaki 250. Penatello took the first place in his class
and fourth in overall after the total points of both heats were
added. He took the first place even after having started a bit
behind in the second heat. In second place Oton Guzman on his
pink XR600. In third place Jaime Sanoja from Tijuana who raced
with an injury on his shoulder and as a result had to have surgery
the next day, yet this situation did not keep him from becoming
the champion in overall in motorcycles as well as in his class.
In the other hand Manuel Contreras who competed on "Gordos"
Salas XR650 bike which was a bit big for him couldn't complete
both heats due to him falling on the third turn and ending up
with the fourth place.
M/C Veterans
Juan Lora from Tijuana took the first place in his class and with
this triumph also the first position on the final point count
of the year. This first place was initially a tie between Juan
Lora and Jimmy Lizarraga, but was then untie when Jimmy lost his
opportunity because he was disqualfied from the race for taking
short cuts, leaving Lora with #1v for the next season. Lora won
both heats keeping the first position and leaving in second Luis
Adan Lopez C. who raced on his powerful 600. In third place Leonel
Vallejo from Rosarito who in the last Baja 2000 succeeded in the
race by finishing in third position, in class 21 in Beto Verber's
motorcycle.
M/C Open Novice
Esteban Garcia had a hard battle for the first place on his class
with Francisco Iniguez and Garcia defeated him in both heats taking
with him the championship on 125 of the series. Iniguez got the
second place while Daniel Eduardo Meza remained on the green flag
of the starting point, because his motorcycle broke down when
he started on the first heat and this was the motorcycle in which
his cousin Jusus "Kojak" Carillo took the championship
on 125 in the past series.
M/C 125 Novice
On this class there were three competitors and only one was on
a 125, the other two were riding on 80cc. The first place was
given to Andres Pareda from Mexicali and this being his first
race. Pareda left Angel Narain Gonzalez from Rosarito in second
place and Jose Roberto Villalobos in third place because both
motorcycles broke down on the first heat leaving Pareda the opportunity
to win the class.
Quad Open Pro
Tito Alvarez #1 from Tijuana succeeded on both heats on his powerful
Lobo 265 and also achieved the championship in points of the series,
and he got first place in quads to get the place #Q1 for 2001.
Alvarez left Roberto Buendia in second place, he raced on Enrique
Felix's motorcycle the same one they used to go over the track
for the Baja 2000. Buendia got the championship in class 24 in
Felix Racing Team. In this race he changed to class pro and got
a second place. In third place Joel Leal. In fourth place the
championship of the class Rafael Pinedo who used a brand new Lobo
for this race.
Quad Open Expert
Joselito Muro in his well known black quad took the trophy for
first place, he was constant on both heats. Muro raced with no
problems and left Ricardo Barba in second place who raced in his
blue Banshee. In third Gabriel Velazquez.
Quad Open/Novice
On the novice category there were two new faces that were the
ones that took the first and second places. In first place Francisco
Segura who raced on his blue Banshee and Gilberto Perez got second
place in his Suzuki 400. In third place the new champion in his
class Rafael Cabrera. In fourth place due to the break-down of
his transmission, Luis Navarro.
MiniQuads Class A
The small but talented racers also fought for the first places
in their class. In the eight years and over category, Mariano
Escobar from Ensenada succeeded on both heats to complete the
1-1 and to leave in second place Victor Jose Malo.
MiniQuads Class B
In the category eight years and under, Alex Coria repeats his
triumphs by winning the first place in his class and with this
obtaining the championship of the series 2000. In second place
Carlos Enrique Rodriguez from San Diego with his first participation
in the series. In third place the young Maria Jose Palacios in
her quad and in fourth place Fernando Barba who only completed
one heat.
It was a great year and finally with all the champions being recognized
and awarded for their places on each class the new series 2001
begins.

SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge
January 20-21, 2001
Watching and waiting as the three front runners all fell
off the pace, Steve Sourapas came from behind in his Chevy-powered
Jimco to capture the overall victory Sunday at the 7th Annual
SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, held along the banks of the Colorado
River adjacent to the growing Southern Nevada resort destination
of Laughlin.
Racing in the unlimited Class 1, Sourapas beat a field of 181
racers in the first major motorsports race of the year-the opening
round of the five-race 2001 SCORE Desert Series, America's foremost
desert racing series.
Las Vegas' Brian Collins pulled off a major upset in winning the
featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division in a Chevy Silverado as racers
came from eight states, Mexico and Japan to launch the new racing
season during the unique, four-days of SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge.
Sourapas, of Rancho Santa Fe, fourth after Saturday's first half
of the two-day race, kept himself in a position to win Sunday,
finishing the 96.8-mile race run as eight laps over a 12.6-mile
course in a total elapsed time of one hour, 45 minutes, six seconds,
averaging 55.262 miles per hour.
"We outlasted them today, I'll go four more (laps)-I'm ready,"
said Sourapas, who also won SCORE's last race in Nevada-last August's
SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300. "This car is limited in what it
can do-you have to drive it accordiingly. I drove a conservative
race like I always do. I just decided Thursday before last to
run this race-it's an awesome way to start the season."
Split into two days of racing with 16 classes for desert race
cars and exotic race trucks divided into seven groups for seven
separate races each day. From sunrise to sunset, racers cover
the 12.6-mile loop desert course in multiple-lap races with time
limits of 75 or 85 minutes each. The event finishing order, by
class, was based on the combined two-day elapsed time of each
racer.
Starting Sunday, John Herder, Troy Herbst and Dale Dondel were
dueling just five seconds apart in Class 1, but Herder and Dondel
both did not finish Sunday and Herbst slipped to third behind
runnerup Jeff Quinn, Irvine. Driving a Porsche-powered Jimco,
Quinn finished in 1:48:44 while Herbst, in a Ford-powered Smithbuilt,
ended up four seconds behind Quinn.
Looking for their third straight Laughlin win in the marquee SCORE
Trophy-Truck division, Las Vegas' Tim and Ed Herbst were in command
after Saturday's first four laps, extending their lead on Sunday
for the first three laps before fuel pump/vapor lock problems
on the final lap put them out of contention.
For Collins it was his first victory in SCORE Trophy-Truck as
he held off the hard-charging Duralast Ford F-150 of the Dan Smith/David
Ashley team of Riverside, by just 41 seconds.
Danny Anderson of Las Vegas won Class 10 for 1650cc race cars
in his Toyota-powered Jimco. Fourth after the first half of the
race, Saturday, Anderson picked up his second straight Class 10
win in Laughlin.
Las Vegas' Rob MacCachren, a prominent second generation Southern
Nevada desert racer, returned to his race roots to win Class 1-2/1600
in a VW-powered 1600cc race car built by Las Vegas' Bruce Farley.
Second after the first day, MacCachren ran the fastest Sunday
in the class which featured a race-high 30 starters. It was the
first time he raced in SCORE Class 1-2/1600 since his first season
of SCORE racing in 1983. He won his class by 14 seconds over Adam
Pfankuch of Carlsbad. MacCachren trailed Pfankuch by 34 seconds
Saturday and finally took the lead after seven of the eight total
laps.
Veteran George Seeley Jr., Glendale, continued his Class 5 winning
ways in Laughlin as he cruised to his third straight win in the
race and his fourth in the last five years in the class for unlimited
VW Baja Bugs. His victory margin in the 96.80-mile race was 8
minutes, 26 seconds.
Chip Woodward, Chula Vista, won Class 11 for Stock VW Sedans for
the second straight year.
Other class winners included: Allan Gregory, Alpine (Class 5/1600);
Steve Barlow, Temecula (Protruck/SS/Truck); Steve Greinke, Orange
(SCORE Lite); Scott Sells, Wildomar (Class 7); Joel Stankavich,
Barstow (Class 7S) and Marc Stein, San Diego (Stock Full).
