Letters to the Editor - March 2001

MANY THANKS
Dear Sherri and Steve:
Thank you for the framed copy of your first edition. It will be a special addition to my wall collection. Hard to believe it has been almost 20 years.
I saw your new release (February 2001) today. That was a very good cover, excellent tribute to Larry Collie. He would have liked it very much.
Please let me know where I can get a dozen copies or so. I'd like to send some to "Buggy" and Ma Liz in Arkansas, also to Karl and Bill in Oregon.
Thanks again for everything. Keep up the good work. God Bless.
Racingly Yours,
BOB BASILE

OFF ROAD EXPO A SUCCESS
Sherri:
Thank you for all your support and help in getting the word out about our first show. It was the kind support we got from great people like you that made our show a great success. Thanks again from myself and SDORC.
Warmest Regards,

THEY AGREE: BAD ATTITUDES SHOULD NOT BE PROMOTED
Dear Sherri:
When I read your column about your New Years Resolutions (SDOR, January 2001), I couldn't wait to show my wife the third resolution. I often hand the paper to her when I see things she might be interested in. She really enjoys reading your columns. When she read this one we both looked at each other and said "This is what we've been talking about."
We have a 16-year-old boy at home and we are consistently amazed at all the extremely negative things that he finds cool: Skulls, fire, devil pictures, tattoos and drawings, dark rock n roll bands and clothing that match, WWW fighting and the big middle finger, Metal Mulisha and all the images that go with it. Most of the music ether have words about how bad the world is, or how to kill themselves or how to tell anyone to F- off in so many different ways. To top all the negative things off, most of the video games the kids are interested in, are about killing or shooting someone in the game. Some of these are so real that it gives my wife and I the chills.
Now don't get me wrong here, we aren't running for the hills afraid of what is going to happen next. We both believe life is great, we love to be alive and it's great to be here. We are just amazed at all the negative pictures we all are constantly bombarded with in just about every area of life. We do believe in treating people the way you would like to be treated. I do believe all people truly want to be treated in the same way with respect and some degree of kindness. As you say in your column, people are buying things that say loud and clear, "I like negative, I could treat you like crap so watch out and yes I'm bad, stay away!" Do you really want everyone to know your bad?
After my wife read the article we had an extensive talk about all these issues. It lead to many other good discussions.
The next day my wife was walking the dog on a beautiful San Diego winter day. As she was walking she heard someone yelling in back of her and two 20-year old boys jogging pushed her, kicked the dog real hard and said "Get your **** out of the way." The dog yelped in pain, the boys ran off laughing and my wife was left frustrated and angry. This isn't the way I want to be treated, how about you?
I agree with you Sherri, people need to stop buying this stuff that doesn't show their true attitude. No one really wants to be treated rude, bad and negative, do they???

MORE THANKS FROM SDORC
SDOR:
On behalf of the San Diego Off-Road Coalition, I would like to thank you for participating in the San Diego Expo on January 6-7. We appreciate your efforts in highlighting and discussing relevant issues with members of the off road community.
The displays and education materials you presented were of great interest. We had more vendors and attendees than we had any right to expect at our first annual expo, and most appeared to think it was a great show and are already looking forward to next year's.
We had hoped to turn a profit to help us fight to keep our public lands open to motorized recreation; we did that.
Most importantly, we had fun, and helped a few thousand off-roading friends have fun as well. We hope you had fun and will plan to participate again.
Thank you again.
Best Regards,
JANETTE McGARVIE
Secretary, San Diego Off-Road Coalition
